Firefighter

A firefighter volunteering at the Olathe Police Foundation event yesterday that I cover for them. I shot well over a 1000 photos so maybe I'll move some things around.

I will admit that I am a huge sucker for a genuine smile. It should be obvious to all of you already since I generally comment about a lot about smiles. Simply put a smile lights up ones face. Now the real question is since I know this why am I always so crabby and grouchy looking instead of smiling? Paul. ;-)

T - my workflow:
I currently have a laptop with a 1.5T internal HD. On that I have, along with all my documents, my photos from 2015 and 2014. All the other photos from yrs 2013 back are stored on an external 3T HD. This same external HD is my backup for photos for 2014 and 2015.
This external HD is then backed up to a 2nd 3T HD.

When I shoot a large number of photos at one time (eg 1000 at an airshow), I tend to cull them fairly quickly down to a reasonable size, usually in half. I then keyword and rate them for further processing. All this is done in Lightroom. I then back them up. I then proceed to post process in LR, with a few being sent to PhotoShop for extra work. Any panos that I shoot result in tiffs out of PTGui, and a few in dngs from LR.

Since I have started with LR, I don't have a lot of jpegs or tiffs anymore, so most of by backups are raw files along with the LR catalog. I have a few large jpegs which resulted from making files to be printed, the tiffs that I made in PS, and the small jpegs that I use to post here.
I have switched to Flickr to host most of my photos, but LR will post there directly without creating a local jpeg. I occasionally go back a few years and cull a few more photos from one of the large shoots that I believe I will never use again - usually one of the low rated shots that never got fully processed.

I am thinking about a new desktop computer for next year, but that probably won't change this basic workflow.

I loved the smile on this lady standing in the chow line in the rain so I had to shoot her. She noticed me and said "did you take my picture?" And I responded "yes I did because I loved your smile".

I have a desktop computer with a 256 meg SSD and a 1.5TB USB backup for the most important day to day stuff, specifically the businesses files. Then I have 2 other drives in the computer with 1 being a 2TB which is where all of the photos are stored and another 1TB additional backup drive that I drop and drag important files to. I've got countless 8, 32 and 64 gig USB thumb drives but in the end the best method I use for storage if culling the repetitive and NFG photos. An example is for the race of course I was using the 50D and the 70-200 on a mono pod and shooting burst so there will be plenty of duplicates, dull duds and oof shots to clear out. I'm working on that at the moment till I head out the door to the 1st job this morning. Paul

I believe that you shoot a lot...so do I...almost 200 at Disney Hall and a walk through Los Angeles...how are you handling storage of so much stuff....size-wise?

I keep transferring images (jpeg) from several years ago to an external HD....because my computer HD is only one T....this gets used up fast.

So, what are you doing?

I thought of a different work flow...only images that I'm going to work on are converted from CR2's and DL'd to to my actual computer....this winnowing can take place actually on the SD Card, with the originals being downloaded to the External HD....but maybe not the worked on or finished images?

Hummm...what does everyone think of this?
