Jim, that's true, but maybe not. With the Canon tc's, you'd lose AF on anything but
a 1 series camera, but then there's a way of taping pins that sometimes works.
Some 3rd party tc's that don't report to the camera that they're there, will sometimes work.
Me, I stick with what works all the time with any camera.
I end up paying more for that, but I sleep better knowing things will work when I want them to.

I recall reading somewhere that if I use a 2x tc (maybe even a 1.4 tc) that I lose the auto focus ability on the 100-400. I don't like that.
On my 60D, the sensor crop factor get me 1.4 anyway.

I do use a 2x tc on either a Canon 300 f2.8 or on a Sigma 120-300 f2.8.
Either way you end up with a f5.6 lens equiv. I normally bump it up to f8
to get a little sharper shot to start the process.
With a 1.4 tc, I'll shoot wide open (f4) all day long. The shots come out sharp.

If I remember correctly Dave uses a 2x teleconverter on the 300L which would make it a F8 lens and Jim you could also use one that would make your 100-400 a F11 at 800 mm.

Thanks. I use a 100-400 a lot, and I find that with the IS and <1/800 sec or I can maintain pretty decent sharpness. But 600 mm is pretty impressive at 1/640.
When I am hiking in the mountains, I'll carry a monopod for the landscape shots, but all birds in flight are handheld.

No tripod or monopod was used for this shot. If I know that I'll be shooting
At the same elevation, for a lot of shots ( think in the hundreds ) then I'll use
A monopod. The only time I use a tripod is when shutter times become unmanageable.
Maybe around a 1/4 of a second.
I guess I'm a good sized guy, 6-2, work construction, so the weight isn't that bad.
I have very steady hands up to this point in my life.

Dave - A quick question.
This is quite sharp (as all of yours are). Did you use a tripod or monopod for this 600mm shot?

Another great capture. I have a trip planned to the area next year and hope to see these.

This was a great day from our resent trip to the Badlands/Black Hills.
It was cold, windy, snowing, and just not a lot of fun standing outside taking photos.
This was from Wind Cave NP. This was the first time that we had seen bull elk in this area.
There were 7 on them on a hill side.
I'll be keeping my eye out for them when I go there again.

Personally I find this fascinating. They look majestic. Paul
