I'm curious as to how long it continues to glow after the lights go out. I'll guess to some degree it glows all night long. Paul

Well, I needed a shallow DOF for the Challenge...I did not move this object....these are tendrils deep within the glass.

Interestingly, when I finish reading at night, I turn off the light and just stare as this blue glow....it is stupid at some level, at another it is beautiful and brings me great pleasure, (really).

Another thought - this looks like a great subject to use "paint with light".

I love it - great result.
These are fun things to shoot. So are the blue streaks on the left due to transmitted and or reflected light? or because you moved the moved the glass during the exposure.

Yes, eventually, this is what I figured out....yet you would think that the camera would focus on that shimmering blue light...but because it was inside of heavy glass....it would only hunt....and fiddling with controls in the dark drove me crazy...also proper position of this heavy glass is vertical, so I had to find a clear plexiglass holder and prop that up at an angle because I need it to float on two axis's for the 3/4 angle shot...etc, etc

But fun!

The challenge of the shot.

Trav, what you have to do is setup your camera on a tripod, focus in good light, turn off Auto Focus if you don't use back button focusing, turn off light, adjust the exposure settings then shoot. Preferably with a remote cord or timer. Looks very cool and interesting no matter how difficult it was to capture it. Paul

Great Job Traveller! I thought jelly fish as soon as I saw it. Very eery feeling to it. How do you spell eery, anyway?
Traveller02-Dec-2013 23:09
It is a fairly large and heavy piece of glass with a phosphorescent inner core...that looks jellyfish-like. I would normally never buy anything in a state park gift shop....and I agonized over this purchase....but I am quite happy with it. I bought it at San Simeon, Hearst Castle.

Trying to focus and take the shot in a completely dark room was a frustrating challenge...but in the end, fun.

Very interesting. I think I see motion, but I have no clue as to what it is.

My goodness, you bought yourself a scanning electron microscope. At first glance I think it's a jelly and then at 2nd glance I still think it's a jelly finally at 3rd I admit I have not clue. No matter what it is it's quite interesting! Paul
