I'm thinking this will be doing very well in the vote boot just because of it "unique factor"! Paul

Agree with the comments so far. Really interesting subject and excellent use of the square composition. Well done Mr T. Regards, -Najinsky.

Beautiful shot, Traveller. The composition is very interesting, as is the subject. - CameraShy09

I forgot to mention that this is a nice find and capture Trav. I'm not usually a fan of straight on flat photography but it works perfect here, good job. Paul

That is very interesting, Paul, thank you very much!

That's the answer, and a good answer it is.

This is not your ordinary navigation compass, this is a Luopan feng shui compass. The Chinese are big in believing that positive energy flows with the heavens and earth and everything is about angles.
More on this subject here.http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Feng_shui If you want to learn more yet, Google luopan

"I think it is a compass. In the upper left corner are the characters for Hong Kong. It is followed by words like 'old firm manufacturer.' "

I'm asking, this is the response....so far....gotta run.

I might also add that this comes in a nice, leather bound hard box, with a brass locking front latch. For protection, I suppose, from prying eyes...

I like to think that this is a navigation tool for coastal boats at sea....but I still think it a fortune telling thing-a-ma-jig, truth be know.

Now this is one interesting image.
Well composed, so you want to study it. And after studying it, I can only guess that it is some sort of a map of the sky, and probably stars.

Yes, I rather love the functioning bubble level myself....I think it is there so that the compass needle never jams or gets hooked up from not being perfectly flat.

An interesting instrument that I purchased in Hong Kong....I haven't a clue what it is or does.

I may ask a Chinese client, however before this Challenge is over.

Traveller, if you know what this is, can you please let us know? The green bubble at the lower right seems to be there because the pane must be aligned perfectly horizontally for an unknown reason, there is a compass, pointing to 150 degrees, and there are a lot of chinese characters, some of them compass points, some of them numbers as known from Mah Jongg, the inner lines might be related to I Ching trigrams, the Yin and Yang symbol, and an esoteric title; perhaps it is some instrument having to do with Chinese horoscopes? Nice contrast between the deep red and the light green of the bubble. -Gerald

Yes, they are stains on the brass turning plate...I have thought of polishing this clean again....but, I just can't....lol. Antique is old, tis the way it is.

I'm always impressed at how a circle fits so nicely in a square format. This subject has good interest with wonderful complementary autumn colors. I'm curious about the four shadows on the face of the calendar (???). Are these stains?
