Puy de Dôme

The Temple of Mercury was destroyed in the '60’s to make way for the telecommunications systems...
...now, at huge cost, it is being rebuilt using many of the old stones and pumice from surrounding volcanic outflows.

Puy de Dome I know from the Tour de France
In 1964 Raymond Poulidor battled with Jacques Anquetil in one of the race's most famous moments, racing side by side up almost the entire climb, and in 1975 Eddy Merckx was punched in the kidney by a spectator.

Interesting. It seems the 1960s were notorious for this sort of destruction for the sake of modernization. Many towns across Texas lost historic courthouses, most masterpieces designed by famous architects in the late 1800s. And torn down to make way for plastic, glass and metal boxes with no personality.

We seem to be much more enlightened when it comes to saving our heritage nowadays although serious casualties are bound to occur.

This location gives me a reminder of Crystal Palace where the Great Exhibition buildings caught fire in 1936, and some Chinese investors have thought about rebuilding a copy there. And of course, there is communications mast there too....
