The first Anglia was introduced in 1939, with an 8hp engine designed for earlier models. It had running boards and featured a plain upright radiator grille.
In post-war production, the Anglia lost its running boards and, in 1949, given a new raked-back grille.
An earlier version of this car, in black paint, was my very first car (I was still at secondary school at the time), which my father bought for £30,
if I recall correctly. (He paid for me to learn to drive at 17, but then didn’t like the idea of me driving his car!) It had no heater
(though I fitted one with parts from a scrapyard) and windscreen wipers that worked by vacuum, and which stopped when accelerating!
