Steveston's main industry was salmon canning, which began in 1871, and the town was sometimes known
as Salmonopolis. The Gulf of Georgia Cannery was built in 1894 and was the largest building of its
kind and the leading producer of canned salmon in British Columbia. The plant was closed in 1979.
It was reopened as a museum (National Historic Site of Canada) in 1994.
