Ostankino TV Tower, snapped in passing from the bus. The tower is 540m tall and was the first free-standing
structure to exceed 500m in height. Built in 1963-67 to mark the 50th anniversary of the October Revolution,
and was the highest building in the world until the CN Tower, Toronto, was completed in 1976.
It is built from prestressed concrete and is held to the ground by 10 tensioned cables.
The first time I visited Moscow, in 1977, I had the privilege of a personal tour of the tower, and
saw these cables. My Russian hosts were quite upset at the time, having just been overtaken by the CN Tower!
