The Kremlin, Moscow

The Moscow Kremlin. A kremlin is a major fortified central complex found in many historic Russian
cities, although the word is often used to refer to the most famous one, the Moscow Kremlin.
The Kremlin was the Citadel of the Tsars, headquarters of the Soviet Union and now the residence of
the Russian president. The first wooden kremlin was built here in 1156. In the late 15th century,
Tsar Ivan III had built a new complex including the Cathedral of the Assumption and the Faceted Palace

The view shown here is of the walls and the Great Kremlin Palace, built for Tsar Nicholas I as the
Moscow residence of the royal family, where they stayed when visiting from St Petersburg, then the capital.
