Also known as Tsarskoe Selo.
Designed in 1752 for Tsarina Elizabeth, and named in honour of her mother Catherine I, who originally
owned the estate. The palace was redesigned during the reign of Catherine the Great according to
more Neo-Classical taste. The palace includes the famous Amber Room (no photography allowed!), which
disappeared during Wolrd War II. It was recreated from photographs in 2003, after decades of work by Russian craftsmen.
