Ponte della Maddelena, to the north of Lucca.
One of many medieval bridges known as Ponte del Diavolo – Devil’s Bridge. A splendid example of
medieval engineering, commissioned by the Countess Matilda of Tuscany, around 1080-1100. In the
early 1900s, an additional arch was added to the far end of the bridge, to accommodate a surfaced
roadway, drastically altering the original design.
