Begun around 19 BC, this bridge is part of an aqueduct built to transport 20 million litres of
water daily from a spring near Uzčs to Nīmes, a distance of 50 km. The source was only 17 m
higher than the Castellum in Nīmes, where the water was stored. The water channel was in the
top tier of the bridge, which was the tallest aqueduct in the Roman empire, and it seems to have
continued supplying water to Nīmes until as late as the 9th century AD.
