Fishguard (in Welsh Abergwaun, the “mouth of the River Gwaun"). The town is in two parts,
Lower Fishguard is a typical fishing village with a tidal quay, Upper Fishguard contains
most of the modern development. The name derives from old Norsk fiskigardr, meaning
“fish-catching enclosure”. Fishguard was used as Llareggub in the 1970s film of Under Milk Wood,
starring Richard Burton, Elizabeth Taylor and Peter O’Toole.
