Originally a golf course, this area of Vancouver was destined to become a housing development
in the 1970s. Public interest and action from a dedicated group of citizens, together with
donations from the philanthropist W J Van Dusen, ensured that 55 acres were set aside for the
botanical gardens, which now house on of the world's largest collections, with over 7000 different kinds of plants.
