Fort Fremont is located at Lands End on St. Helena Island, SC. It is said that a ghost light can be seen on the road to the Lands End and many believe that it is the spirt of a soldier that died at the fort.
The original site was developed in 1875 and included a wharf extending into Port Royal Sound, as well as a clapboard hospital structure to support the Parris Island Naval Base. It was named for Savannah native John C. Fremont, the same Fremont that blazed trails across the West with Kit Carson, but he died long before the fort was finished.
