The General Store

The General Store

Sad, isn't it? When we first moved to Stirling City this was a real olde time general
store complete with pot-bellied stove, a butcher shop, post office, hardware and
groceries. Towns folk tended to stop in daily for their mail, groceries or to touch
bases with other residents.

This is close to what the general store looked like when we moved to town 30 years ago. At
that time, it was called Mayfield's Market.

The store has been allowed, for whatever reason, to deteriorate to its present rundown condition.
I wasn't able to get a shot from a similar angle as that in the photo above because trees have been
allowed to grow around the edge of the property. At this point the store is far beyond saving.

Most of the larger buildings in town have burned down; the saw mill was dismantled in the 60s and
the town is slowly disappearing.

What a shame they let it fall into this condition. Wonder if I still have the photos I painted from.
Love, Mom

it's really sad - it's happening all over here too

My kind of place Cheryl. There is something so appealing about warped boards, broken windows and peeling paint. I love those silent, lonely, abandoned places that are overlooked or ignored by most people.

This is great, Cheryl. The composition and tone are perfect.

I like the weathered colors and textures. If we are making it a coffee shop, free WiFi would be nice :)

it would be really cool to fix this old place up and make a coffee shop?!

Yes it´s sad, but you have you have captured it well and it´s a nice tribute.

Truly sad. By the time we realize what treasures we had they will all have slipped away.

Supermarkets have a lot to answer for!

I love old building and the fading colors and textures of wooda and peeling paing and this is just an excellent capture. And yes, it's sad. Especially if it's replaced by a superstore. The angle is great, composition wise.

A sad sign of the times. Life was so simple, so who the heck decided we wanted it differant & has it done us any good...
