IMG_4045 Sta.Croce North wall.jpg

The North wall of Sta. Croce seen here, shows many of the tombs and memorials detailed in the preiivous image.
Some of the more famous tombs can be found in my other Florence galleries.

In its history, Sta. Croce has been the victim of 50 major floods due to its location only a block from the Arno river.
The church ,with its numerous artworks and tombs has been severly damaged over the centuries,
most recently by the great flood of November 4, 1966.
Some major artworks, like Giotto's great crucifix which hung directly over the altar, were beyond repair.
The nave of the St. Croce Church was nine feet deep in mud, oil and water,
and at one time, the flood water line could be seen on the columns of the nave shown here.

Restoration from the ravages of time and floods was still ongoing for the past 10 years or so,
and only recently has the nave been free of restoration scaffolding.
