The Vatican Pinacoteca displays one of Raphael's greatest works, "The Transfiguration of Christ", shown here centrally between two other paintings.
The "Transfiguration", painted around 1517-18, was Raphael's last painting, and shows many of the characteristics of "Mannerism",
such as brilliant color, somewhat awkward poses and extravagant gestures of some of the figures.
The painting illustrates two separate episodes from Matthew's Gospel, Christ's transfiguration on Mt. Tabor,
with Christ soaring in the upper part of the painting with the prophets Matthew and Elijah on either side.
The lower part of the picture shows the Apostles with the obsessed youth who will be miraculously cured by Christ
after he has descended from Mt. Tabor.
