I was surprised at Perugia.
Having been there several times from mid 70's to late 80's, the town's appearance has changed drastically in the "tourist area".
When I was last there, this "main drag" was paved with cobblestones, had a few small green areas,
and some outdoor trattorias, charming shops, and exuded an aura of an old Italian hill town.

Perugia was known then (and now) for its language school, as well as for its artistic treasures.
Perhaps this steady stream of foreign tourists wanting to "learn Italian fast", has brought Perugia into the modern age ?
Perugia has covered over the old streets with modern paving stones, obliterated small green areas,
moved the charming trattorias into a cental area of umbrella tables, and covered the little shops with glitzy shop windows.
