Mycenae - Malcolm coming out of cistern at Mycenae.jpg

In this image, Malcolm emerges from the cistern inside the Mycenaean citadel. The cistern is accessed down steep winding worn stone steps of the "corbelled vault".
Corbelling is a method of stacking the stones with each layer overlapping the previous one underneath, creating a sort of pointed vault.

Having a water source inside a city walls was an essential element in the city's defense.
When you descend the steep stone steps to the cistern far beneath the surface, it is difficult to imagine women carrying
water jugs on their heads and accomplishing this feat every day.
