Mangroves got a lot of attention during the recent tsunami tragedy of 2004. They were recognized for playing a vital role in protecting stretches of coast, such as those in northern Malaysia, by dissipating the force of the tidal waves. They also play a very important part in the health of the coastal ecosystem. Unfortunately, much of the world's mangroves are under threat, just as they are in Malaysia. This stretch of the coast where I made this image has been earmarked for resort development, which resulted in strong protest from the public. Will this young mangrove survive man's wave of destruction?
