Velvet Ant - Dasymutilla occidentalis

A velvet ant is actually a wingless wasp, which demonstrates how similar and closely related ants are to wasps. (Conversely, winged carpenter ants look quite a bit like small wasps).

Thanks for the comment. I think in certain light this species appears orange. On this day it was not very sunny so it looks dark. I have no idea why they are fuzzy.

Hi,

That's one cool velvet ant you've got there. I've seen these before. The last on I came across was orange but it had the same color pattern as yours. Could it be a color variation?
