Fer-de-lance - Bothrops asper

La Selva Biological Station, Costa Rica

The signs at La Selva warn you that dangerous snakes are abundant and can be found anywhere: mainly they are referring to this deadly, cryptically colored viper. We kept an eagle eye out for them during the day, and were careful not to step off the trail too often, but there was no missing this huge, gleaming snake stretched across the trail at night, illuminated by our flashlights.

These are impressive snakes, aren't they? We saw two in CR including one that our guide almost stepped on. Fortunately, I saw it before I walked on it!
