23rd August Spiky

The great thing about a new garden is seeing what appears. This plant is a mystery to me, it's been just sitting there with these spiky heads and not doing very much. At the weekend is started to produce little blue flowers. Fiona hated it and wanted me to pull it up, but I wanted to wait until it had died down for the winter, I'm glad I did.
I'd be grateful if anyone can give me a name for it.
Another shot of it.

James this plant is an "Echinops Ritro" or globe thistle...
Down south in my garden it's finished flowering?!?
