Because the Philippines didn't develop commercialy as fast as its neighbors, we therefore should be thankful because as a result,
the land has remained mainly agricultural which nowadays is crucial in these trying times ...
The country is abundant with stomach-filler alternatives to rice such as kamote (sweet yam) and potatoes. Personally I prefer steamed carrots or kalabasa (squash) in lieu of our staple food. Who knows, the rice supply crisis may well have been a blessing in disguise since its over-consumption here has contributed to the country having the highest incidence of diabetes in Southeast Asia.
