Jarod is holding a flask on it's side after removing the pattern, cutting a hole for the sprue, and carving a small channel for the aluminum to flow into the pattern. The sprue is the entrance hole for the hot metal and the channel is called a gate. Metal casts best if it falls down the sprue into a basin, and then flows into the mold cavity, leaving turbulence and displaced sand in the basin.
