Painted Water

ON LEARNING HOW TO LOOK

But see –
if you look behind the waves,
beyond each single stroke of silver-threaded water,
to where the sky connects
in an ever-increasing pattern of ruffled light and darkness –
that is where you’ll find,
inches above the water, hovering,
a world so quiet, even the remotest of sounds can vanish into it.
You need only to look.
Just look.
