I saw my first pileated woodpecker today at Bledsoe state Park. Beautiful bird, very large

Wonderfully large. One of these monsters "attacked" the wood on my deck in Roane County. I was simply amazed by its size and zeal by which it tore into the post on my deck while seeking wood boring bee nests. Before I saw this bird I thought someone was hitting the deck post with a hammer!

I saw my first and only pileated last summer a mile from the beginning of Natchez Trace Pkwy. Its call was almost prehistoric sounding. A lot of flapping noise made as it took flight. Majestic and surprisingly large.
