First Blooming 5-30-24

"Audrey III" Daylily

Photographed outside on our upper deck.

This is the first daylily that I've ever pot grown. I bought the root early Spring 2023. She grew leaves all last Summer 2023, and then she spent the Winter in our Solar Room. Now, over a year later, she is blooming for the very first time. The bulb variety has an official "name' given it by the hybridizer. That name is "Best Seller". I have no idea of why the hybridizer named this daylily that. However, catchy names are better than just numbers for selling a special new hybrids. Names evoke emotion. Maybe "Best Seller" was wishful thinking on the hybridizer's part. Whatever, this sure is a pretty flower.

Nevertheless, as soon as my husband saw the plant in bud yesterday, he immediately renamed it to Audrey. We now call the plant Audrey III. Maybe yesterday's photo https://pbase.com/update_image/174595547 will help you understand the new name of Audrey III. When looking at the bud, my husband immediately thought of "The Little House of Horrors" and Audrey II.

Luckily, fully open, the blossom on Audrey III is truly beautiful and has no resemblance at all to Audrey II in the plays or movies. The "teeth" developed into frilly ruffles that enhance the large bloom's beauty. Too bad that daylilies only bloom for a single day. It is a very striking and feminine flower. It would be nice to have the blooms on this plant last longer like regular lilies do. However, this fleeting flower has 4 more buds that should eventually look just like her.

Hemerocallis 'Best Seller' (aka Audrey III) is a compact, extra-fancy daylily that's perfect for perennial gardens and containers. The flowers have wide, lavender-pink petals trimmed with yellow ruffles, and are lit up by a glowing yellow-green throat. Blooms midseason and reblooms on and off right until frost. Compact Size, Fragrant, Rebloomer

Hummm??? Mine does not seem to have a green throat. Nor does this on-line photo with the plant's info https://www.gardenia.net/plant/hemerocallis-bestseller. Both look yellow to me. so, I assume mine is blooming true.

Love the details you captured and how well the daylily shows against that dark background.
