My Favorite 1-08-23

Poinsettia

Home grown since the Christmas of 2019.

Although I've had other poinsettias rebloom in the past, this is the first poinsettia that I've ever been able to get to reflower this well. She has 6 beautiful bracts, and the flowers (in the center of the red leaves) are just now starting to open up.

My secret? Well, truthfully, I didn't do anything special. All the horticulture literature says that you should do a list of things to get a poinsettia to bloom again for the holidays. Instead, I just let Nature do her thing. The red bracts on this plant had formed before the deep freeze in December when I was forced to bring most all my Solar Rooms into the main parts of our home. It's currently in our family room.

While all the other poinsettias (4) that I bought brand new for this Christmas season are now officially past flowering (despite their red leaves remaining), this poinsettia is just now starting to actually flower. I'm happy to see its tiny flowers, which I will post a photo of later.

Maybe if I had followed the special rules to get a poinsettia to rebloom, the currently semi red leaves would also be bright red and the plant would have more flowers. However, when I've tried to follow those rules with other plants in the past, those plants just died... So, I'm more than happy with this plant the way it is this year. I'm actually thrilled. It started to slowly change color back in late September. And I've been watching it closely every day since.
