Seiden's Furs 2017

Seiden's: The city's oldest Fur Salon.
Now just History: http://www.tonyskansascity.com/2013/02/kansas-citys-oldest-furrier-kaput.html

The store actually went out of business in 2007; which was 6 years before the above blog. The building has stood vacate and looking like this for 10 years now. Although the sign out front is no longer lit at night, that sign is considered a city landmark. Seiden's (established 1921)was one of downtown's oldest businesses. Its demise is a sign (no pun intended)of the times.

The restaurant next door is the Majestic Steak House which had a special room that often hosted Al Capone back in the day. The Majestic operates out of the old Fitzpatrick’s Saloon building on 10th and Broadway. Boss Tom and his brother Big Jim were instrumental in the opening of the old saloon that served up booze and a brothel to the Quality Hill neighborhood in the years leading up to Prohibition. The Majestic now hosts jazz performers in what used to be the swinging speakeasy downstairs. That building (with the awning)is to the left of Seiden's.

History...

Kansas City still has a two furriers. One of them has been in business since 1926 and is now third generation family owned and operated. But they are no longer located "downtown". That is probably what has saved them.
"Downtown" today is no longer the downtown of yesteryear where people went to shop.
