Wave2_3361.jpg

Coyote Buttes

This image was taken very much along the lines of other, well-known Wave photographs, with the prominant 'dip' in the wave on the right, and the rest of the Wave falling into the left-hand side of the image. I preferred the even light of early day for this, to focus more on the striations rather than the interplay of light and dark with shadows. I still had some of the back wall beginning to cast a shadow which is somewhat, though not altogether bothersome. I tried many, many perspectives here, using my wide angle in an attempt to bring the 'dip' into more prominance - but it just didn't work as I had hoped. Stepping back a bit, and taking a more standard focal length let me bring attention to two primary curves: the aforementioned dip in the right-hand side of the image, and the broad sweeping curve just below the dark area on the back wall. I absolutely love these two shapes, and placing them in this wild environment of striations was a fun ride! Though it is intriguing and interesting to compose this image without the sandy bottom of the Wave visible (I've done this in several images to emphasize the patterns) - I really like the inclusion of this feature in the photograph...it adds a nice little area of soft relief to an otherwise rather harsh pattern of lines and movement.
Photoshop used to slightly increase contrast and saturation.
