Oak Creek Canyon, AZ

Image was shot in Oak Creek Canyon, near Slide Rock. These trees were several feet apart, and I had to stop down considerably to hold focus on both trees. Several compositions were tried - this was the most appealing. I like the simplicity, the contrast in color and texture, and the hint of wimsy with the initialing of the tree...

Brian, I see one of my on-line students has beaten me to the punch here by suggesting that you not crop this shot. I just wanted you to know that I (unsurprisingly) agree with her. The tiny leaves are not a distraction, they are important context. Catriona sees them symbolizing survival in the harsh desert. (She does not know that Oak Canyon is not a desert but an area dense with vegetation.) I see them as symbolizing life itself. The light and color is glorious. I love this intimate view of an intimate relationship. Although the context is entirely different, I made a shot in Laos last year built around two sets of "twins" -- it's athttp://www.pbase.com/pnd1/image/40200294

Brian, I'm very impresed with your photos - you live in a truly amazing part of the world and you capture the colours and textures beautifully. I would have to disagree with the cropping comments below and I would leave the photo as it is. The leaves add life to the trees showing their ability and strength at being able to survive in a harsh desert environment.

Love this. But, I agree with tmaterman, try a crop across the top to remove the leaves. This just takes it down to the bare essentials. See what you think.--Rene

Brian, I am really impressed with your eye for color and pattern. I love these unique tones playing off one another. Great job!

Beautiful shot - the intimacy of trees . I might have cropped out the leaves at the top of the image to simplify the composition even more.
