Ops room Bentley Priory

This is the actual room where part of the Battle of Britain was fought.Radio direction finding Radar was used by "Stuffy " Dowding the Head of Fighter Command with a large number of spotters in the field to get an overall view of where the enemy planes were. Then a responce was organised. This was all co-ordinated from here and the airforce gave a good account of itself. The Blitz came about largely by accident. The Germans were taking out our military targets then in error hit some civilian areas.Churchill was incensed and ordered six nights of bombing on Berlin.Hitler had promised the german people that if bombs fell on germany they would be repaid tenfold so sixty days of attacks on commercial and civilian targets were commenced .It only got to 57 before it was called off.Hitler could not spare the resourses for more as he was planning the invasion of Russia. There was never any realistic plan for an invasion of Britain.
