Together with my friend Laszlo Illes I made a 5-day tour to this spectacular country in early February. We got 3 full days of photography, but experienced some rather extreme weather conditions. Wind speed sometimes reached over 40 m/s (Hurricane) and in the same day we had thunder, rain, snow blizzards and sunshine! Photography is sometimes hard but could at the same time be very rewarding….
The main goal was to visit the fantastic Jökulsarlon – a place where ice could be photographed in extraordinary surroundings near Vatnajökul - the largest and most voluminous Icelandic glacier, and one of the largest in Europe. It is located in the southeast of the island, covering more than 8 per cent of the country.
The icebergs that calve from the glacier edge move towards the river mouth and get entrenched at the bottom. The movement of the icebergs fluctuates with the tide currents. However, they start floating as icebergs and when their size is small enough they drift to the sea. These icebergs are seen on the beach (close to the main road) in two shades, one type in milky white, while the other type is in bright blue colour.
