Knauf Museum

Iphofen view map

The Winged Griffin pictured is a so-called lion griffin because, in addition to a lion's body, it also has the head of a lion. The front legs are lion's paws, while the hind legs are depicted as bird claws.
The tail here is a lion's tail. Otherwise you will often find a scorpion tail. What is striking, as with all depictions of griffins in Iran, is the emphasis on the horse-like character of the torso.
Most specimens show a growth on the forehead, which goes back to Mi-Annian models and developed into a horn in the Achaemenid area. In the example from Susa there are two ram's horns.
The Knauf Museum Iphofen is a private museum in the Franconian city of Iphofen and a facility of Knauf Gips KG.
The collection of reliefs from the great cultural epochs of antiquity is unique in Europe.
