Norman Worship

Burton Dassett, Warks. view map

I've known there's a church in Burton Dassett for a long time, but for many and varied reasons have never visited it until today...but boy! do I wish I had! I was expecting the usual English village church - probably Saxon in origin but heavily rebuilt and/or restored by the Victorians, but nothing could have prepared me for this! Not for nothing is this 12th century church of All Saints known as the "Cathedral on the Hills"

Walking in through the north door (itself Romanesque in origin and style) I emerged into a very open space, with a high nave and two spacious aisles; despite the dull weather outside, the whole nave and choir were bright and cheery, a result of the windows in the clerestory and bigger windows on the two aisles. But best of all were the visible remnants of 13th century painting - one of the three magi in the north chapel, and other slightly less obvious ones around the other walls. See http://www.paintedchurch.org/bdassett.htm for more info on the paintings.

Well worth a visit if you're ever in the neighbourhood...or if you're not in the neighbourhood, it's certainly worth a detour!

Beautiful - looks like a church you'd find in Italy.
Very nice shot. V

What a light and airy church!...and such wonderful architecture...and the painting looks intriguing...what a discovery.
