Note the slightly darker-gray mantle (backside of the folded wings), larger white primary tips off of the black primaries (feathers streaming off the back-end of the bird), and dark eyes on the Thayer's Gull. Thayer's Gulls tend to be more slender-billed and rounder-headed than Herring Gulls too!
