Picacho was mentioned in the journals of Father Kino back in the 17th century. The Anza Expedition, the Mormon Battalion, the California 49ers and the Butterfield Stage all used it as a landmark and passed by it.
In 1862 a Civil War battle was fought here and is re-enacted every March. It's generally considered the most western battle of the Civil War.
