Old Fort Bayard has been destroyed but a visit to the grounds today shows many grand structures ( but in need of restoration) dating from 1922.
Site of the Army's first TB hospital and home to the Buffalo Soldier and the Fort Bayard National Cemetery, old Fort Bayard was created to fight the Apache Wars from the 1860's-1886. The original fort was built by the Buffalo Soldiers of the Ninth Cavalry.
John J. Pershing served here as a 2nd Lt. from 1886-1887.
