Back down on the shore of the Ikateq channel, I came across the remains of what looked like a bulldozer – perhaps this is what they used to clear the snow and keep the runway level for the planes that used to land here (the runway was a gravel strip on flat land that ran parallel to the shore, just to the left of this picture). The mountains on the other side of the channel are on an island called Qianarteq.
