This is one of two forts built in the 1800s at the mouth of the Columbia River to protect it from enemies of the United States. The other is Fort Stevens on the south side of the Columbia River in Warrenton, Oregon.

These forts remained in active service through World War II and had the most technologically advanced gun emplacements of their time.
