Why is a focal point important?

If your picture is to be visually interesting then it is vital that it has a focal point.
As already stated, the eye needs something to focus on - but this image lacks such a focal point.

Agree with your point ... However when there is a lack of focal point it verges on abstract and this image is wonderful! :)

Who needs a focal point when you have such a super image as this? Great polygonal desiccation cracks - as far as the eye can see.

I agree with Earl. This is still an interesting shot! The lack of an obvious 'figure' makes you focus on the foreground patterns which then leads you into the picture!

The focal point rule is one of those rules of photography that, when broken, often leads to a more intresting photograph. I think this pohoto is very interesting, but perhaps that's because *I* lack focus :-)
