I used to love the Star Ferry and so did my children. We used to note all the names, North Star, Polar Star etc. I used to travel to work from Kowloon Pier by speedboat to Tsing Yi Island when I lived in Kowloon. I used to arrive at the pier looking cool and the Engineers were all sweaty and hot and couldn't understand why I wasn't. I never told them I used to walk through the Ocean Centre first because it was air conditioned to cool down.

Used to take about 20 minutes to ride the star ferry across the harbor. Now? About 8 minutes. Soon the darn thing will be moored in place and used as a bridge!!!

Just a matter of time before the Kowloon side is demolished.

A clarification - the Star Ferry is still there (so far) - but the Central pier with its famous clock tower has been controversially demolished and rebuilt further along the reclamation in a rather tacky faux-Victorian style. It remains to be seen whether the Star Ferry will survive once the bus termius next to the Tsim Sha Tsui pier is turned into a 'shopping piazza'.

There is still the Wan Chai to Hung Hom route, of course.

Nostalgia plus ... The Star is now history but I used to ride this back and forth between Kowloon and Victoria daily back in the mid-60's.
