The Shoes Memorial

The sculptor Gyula Pauer created sixty pairs of period-appropriate shoes out of iron to honor the Jews who were killed by fascist Arrow Cross militiamen in Budapest during World War II.
The Jews were ordered to take off their shoes, and then were shot at the edge of the water so that their bodies fell into the river and were carried away.
The memorial is situated on the west bank of the Danube River.

We were moored on the seawall, just a few yards away from the "Shoes Memorial". I did not know they were made of iron. Looking at my pictures I cannot tell. It is very sobering and sad.

Good that seventy years on the victims are still remembered.
