Overwhelmed, Third Beach, Vancouver, Canada, 2003

Standing before the awesome power of this turbulent sea makes me think of how small we are compared to the majesty and force of nature itself. Yet when I made this picture, I was not afraid to face this raging sea. I can't control nature, but like that distant ship on the horizon, I can learn to ride with its rage. Just like I will ride out the personal storms that life may send my way.

Great..!! Superb Depth of Field and the movement of the waves... The proportions between the boat and the sea breaking in front of you adds a bit more of drama to the scene... Fantastic !!

As I recall, this photo was taken the same day when we visited the third beach. It was a windy day.

Once again, you pulled me into a picture, only to find that Marek had beaten me to it. You are at your best when you surprise us by using an incongruous juxtaposition or relationship to make a point, and tell a story. You did it with the car full of leaves. And you do it again here by contrasting the raging, churning sea in the foreground to the calmness of a distant ship sitting on the vast horizon. The key is your positioning. Unlike a lot of your early landscapes, which were made very static by placing the horizon in the middle of the frame, in this image you place the horizon almost at the top of the frame, leaving only a sliver of sky at the top. That sliver stresses the calmness of the sea, which comes a shock -- given the fact that more than half the picture is filled with turbulent water. This image is undated, yet I would rate it as one of your most powerful and thought provoking images. It speaks to me of the treachery of the sea -- nature is deceptive and you never when it can turn on you.
