A neighbour in space of the much more famous Great Orion Nebula, Messier 78 sits about 1600 light-years away just north of the belt of Orion. It's a dusty complex 5 light-years long, with stars half-hidden amongst dusty wreaths. The brighter blue ones illuminate the dust by reflection, and there are many dimmer stars buried and reddened by the layers of dust.
