Although these cut-outs 'generally' indicate that it's a mosaic, I think in this case I seem to remember it was because the camera wasn't orientated properly, and I probably rotated the image later. I probably had something that subtracted from the overall look of the image and wanted to minimise (hide!) it. It was capturing a flare of course, and time is of the essence in such situations, as you might only have say, 5 min to get the camera on, focus it and take an image(s)
