It is the largest of the four town gates of Ahrweiler and dates from 1255. Always the main target of enemy attacks on Ahrweiler, it has suffered much damage in its history and was frequently repaired. In the Second World War it was almost completely bombed. It was rebuilt in 1958 in a simplified form with the storey heights reduced by one floor.
