The fort was constructed in Ribeira Brava in 1708 by the Governor of Madeira in order to defend against attacks by pirates and privateers. In 1920 these small remains were leased to the town to serve as a prison. Its tower was rebuilt in the twentieth century and today the fort serves as the Tourist Office. Of the original fortress there is only left the wall, an original inscription and the coat of arms.
